Why Tillerson gets fired after assuring Buhari of US support
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson got the boot Tuesday after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.
President Donald Trump fired him on Twitter, and appointed a new secretary.
“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State,” Trump announced on Twitter.
“He will do a fantastic job!”
He thanked Tillerson for his service, and never mentioned why he kicked him out.
But Trump later addressed journalists on Tuesday, and told them he just decided to fire Tillerson.
He added he and Tillerson had divergent views issues such as the Iran nuclear deal, and the North Korean brinkmanship.
Trump said, “Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!”
Tillerson will have to abort his Africa visit in the wake of the development.
The foreign affairs handler has assured Buhari of US assistance to Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram and economic expansion.
