Prison cells vary widely from country to country.

Prisoners in Norway, for example, don't have bars in their rooms, and have access to musical instruments, DVDs, and video games. Meanwhile, in Malawi, a typical cell is squalid and packed with dozens of prisoners.

The wide range of conditions reflects how each country treats its criminals, and raises the question of whether prison is meant to punish them or rehabilitate them.

How Release Of Dapchi Schoolgirls Exposed PDP – Federal Government Explains

The Federal Government on Thursday declared that the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that the adoption and release of the Dapchi schoolgirls were stage-managed portrays the opposition party as an inhuman, insensitive, unpatriotic and unworthy party.

Following the release of the girls abducted by a faction of Boko Haram terrorists, the PDP had in a tweet by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologboniyan, described the kidnap and release of the girls as, “A scam of no equal dimensions the world over.

@OfficialPDPNig had repeatedly warned about conspiratorial plots advanced by @APCNigeria interests to gain heroic attainments.”

Reacting in a statement issued in Abuja by his special assistant, Segun Adeyemi, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said it would have taken a conspiracy of global proportion to have stage-managed the adoption and release of the girls since the release of Dapchi girls followed negotiations by friendly countries and reputable international organizations.

Mohammed maintained that the reaction of the PDP amounts to an expression of sour grapes, especially because the party failed woefully – when it was in power – to quickly resolve a similar abduction of schoolgirls.

He said, “As we have said many times since the abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls, no government is exempted from its own share of tragedies. What makes the difference is the way such tragedies are managed.

Whereas it took the PDP all of 18 days to even acknowledge the abduction of the Chibok girls in 2014, the APC Federal Government acted promptly and responsively when the Dapchi schoolgirls were abducted 19 Feb. 2018, hence their quick release.”

The minister stated that it is unfortunate that the PDP that failed woefully as a ruling party has also failed grievously as an opposition party, going by its insensitive and crude response to the release of the Dapchi schoolgirls – a development that calls for non-partisan celebration.

According to him, “In its 16 years in power, the PDP redefined governance as cluelessness, massive looting of the public treasury and crude exhibition of power.

In its over three years in opposition, the PDP has again shown it does not understand the role of the opposition in a democracy. How then can the PDP convince Nigerians that it has learnt its lessons and that it is ready to rule the country again? Nigerians must say ‘never again’ to this primitive and soulless party.”

5 things we learnt in the Poland vs Nigeria match

5 things we learnt in the Poland vs Nigeria match

The much anticipated friendly match between Nigeria and Poland took place as the Super Eagles were victorious over the World Cup bound Eastern Europeans as the match ended 1-0.

Though the match did not live up to its hype but Victor Moses goal from a penalty kick made the difference between both sides.

The home side gave the former African champions a run for their money but the West Africans ran away with victory with the only meaningful chance created by Gernot Rohr's men.

1. Absence of Mikel Obi

The performance of the Nigerian team stems from the fact Mikel Obi is still a force to reckon with in the Super Eagles squad.

The midfield and the attack could not string passes together as possession were easily lost in key areas of the pitch.

Igahlo in attack was a lone-ranger as he had to work his way from the flanks or the midfield to a deliver a threat towards goal.

2. Gernor Rohr's team did not create meaning chance

The Super Eagles had superior ball possession but did not create chances at goal, the team did not force a save from the Poland goalkeeper all through the match.

However captain Robert Lewandowski was unlucky not to have scored two clear cut chances. The first hit the post while the other was brilliantly saved by Francis Uzoho at point blank range.

Joel Obi closes Robert Lewandowski

Nigeria were lucky for not to have gone behind in the first half as a goal line clearance from Leon Balogun seemed to have crossed the line but it was not given by the referee.

3. One brilliant move made the difference

Victor Moses was the liveliest player in the Super Eagles squad as he dribbled past a Poland defender who tripped the Chelsea man for a penalty.

Victor Moses celebrates as he scores from a penalty

Moses went on to convert the resulting spot-kick as the three-time African champions earned the victory over the eastern European nation.

4. Still a decent side

Despite the sloppy play for the Nigerian side, Poland could not break down the team's resilience when they lost the ball.

Wilfred Ndidi and Troost-Ekong stood in the way of Lewandoswki

They created most of the chances but did could find the back of the net, and only came close on several occasions which was properly dealt with.

5. Much work still needs to be done

No doubt the win will boost the confidence of the men in Green, but more work is needed for Rohr's side to play as a unit.

In all departments of the team, improvement is needed and the inspirational captain will surely make the Nigerian squad a better side in the coming friendlies.

How I was defiled, by four-year-old girl

How I was defiled, by four-year-old girl

A FOUR-and-a-half- year-old pupil of Chrisland School, Lekki Lagos yesterday told an Ikeja Sexual Offences Special Court how her supervisor, Adenekan Adegboyega, defiled her two years ago.

She was led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr B.T. Boye, before Justice Sybil Nwaka.

Asked why she was in the court room, she said: “I am here to explain all the bad things that Mr Adenekan did to me”.

When asked how many times she was defiled, she said “two times.”

She said: “The first time, he did it in his office. The second time was in the corner outside. He put his hand inside my wee wee. It really pained me. When I screamed, he covered my mouth with his hand. When I tried to scream again, he tightened his hand on my mouth”.

At this stage, the prosecutor asked her to identify Adenekan in court but she refused to look at him in the dock.

But when confronted with the pictures of the defendant, she identified her aggressor and retorted: “I remember now. He put his wee wee in my mouth”.

Asked to show where Adenekan’s wee wee was, she touched the mid region of her body to indicate the location of a male’s manhood and to the lower region of her body to indicate her private parts.

She denied visiting Adenekan in her office except on the day “when he did bad thing to me”.

Asked by Adegboyega’s counsel Olatunde Adejuyigbe (SAN), if she loves drawing, she said: “I love drawing but I don’t want to draw in this place. It is very scary.”

The judge then intervened and calmed her.

When confronted by the defence counsel that she was tutored on what to say, the girl replied: “nobody told me what to say when I come here today”.

Earlier under cross examination by Adejuyigbe, the girl’s mother said her daughter told her that Adenekan abused her in his office and at a nearby corner.

The case continues on May 21.
